About TLCoding Lab

Did you know that almost 50% of our students who code are female?

Did you know that almost 50% of our students who code are female?

TLCoding Lab launched in March 2015, as a lunchtime enrichment program/solution, developed by parent volunteers at AcdemicExcellence@TL, to teach computer science to ALL students/grade levels--as our high school has no curriculum or elective classes. AE@TL hopes to work with corporate and community partners to eventually have our Lab/Classroom open daily for lunchtime instruction allowing us to accommodate more students and provide daily exploration/innovation in applied computer science/technology for all students.

TLCoding Lab meets only once a week providing computer science instruction through online materials developed by our generous partner, CodeHS; and also serves as an incubator for students to build community and to develop independent projects around coding and all things tech--as there is no other forum in our school. Our lab is equipped with 30 computers for programming instruction and applied sciences. Our collaboration and shared vision with partners created the following outcomes:  access to computer science year-round; bridges diverse student communities; sparks climate for entrepreneurial teaching and dynamic learning.  TLCoding Lab also attracts community support from industry professionals who volunteer and share experiences to expose new academic and career paths beyond TL.  See our list of special guest speakers at TLCoding Lab.

Innovative Approach

TLCoding Lab gives our students opportunities to try coding without the stigma of grades,  to boost their confidence and provide the encouragement and support needed to position them to succeed in future AP level Computer Science classes. CodeHS generously provides cloud-based online computer science curriculum to students. Our entrepreneurial approach with self-paced learning set in an incubator hub for innovation with a handful of advanced students really get beginners “‘hooked’ on coding, bringing their coding skills quickly up to speed through the peer to near-peer relationship.  TLCoding Lab also targets students with little or no coding experience along with underserved students who can't  to afford expensive private instruction in summer camps or afters school programs. TL Coding Lab is providing an essential knowledge-base/skill-set to better prepare our students for the 21st century because of the shared vision and goals of our collaborative partners.
